Preparing For The Birth Of Jesus
We made ornaments for our class tree today to help celebrate the birth of Jesus. Also, instead of a gift exchange, we are having a "compliment exchange"! We are finishing our letter writing unit this week. Each student secretly drew a classmate's name out of a bowl and we are writing compliment letters to our secret person. Later this week we will reveal our secret classmate names and read our compliment letters to the class. It's our way of spreading JOY this holiday season, which is this week's Character Education trait!

Filled with gratitude!
Our class did a FANTASTIC job performing their "Thankful" song at Gathering this morning. They get to perform it again at Scattering tomorrow. Everyone loved it! Then we asked the entire school to help complete our Gratitude Tree. It looks great, don't you think?

We Voted!!
We had so much fun campaigning for our favorite pretzels today! Cheddar twist pretzels won, followed by honey wheat sticks, pretzel twists, and finally pretzel sticks. The kids loved voting in a "real" voting booth and then casting their ballot in a ballot box!

Chocolate Chip Wins!
We're starting a voting lesson for our Citizenship unit in Social Studies. We talked about why we vote, and then voted as to whether Oreo cookies or chocolate chip cookies were better. Chocolate chip won! Of course, we ate the candidates when we were done!

Our K4/K5 Community Service Project
We made Trick-or-Treat bags for our K4 and K5 friends to go along with our community and "working together " unit in Social Studies. They have safety rules written on one side of the bag, and we drew a fun Halloween picture on the other side!

Welcome Back!
We're tired, but still shining! We're glad everyone had a fun weekend!
This week we're learning how to tell time to the hour in math. We're learning about communities in Social Studies - what makes us the same and what makes us different. We'll be working on a fun class community puzzle and talking about diversity in a community.
We're learning all about our Daily 5 centers in class. Today we talked about Work On Writing. We write at least two sentences a day, and this week's topic is: "If I were a teacher, this is what my day would look like." They are having fun coming up with their own classroom ideas!
Please remember to turn in your Grandparent Day form by this Friday. Also, Parent Night is next week Thursday, 9/11. Hope to see all of you there!

A GREAT start to the year!
We started off on a great note today - with St. Joe's first-ever walk of fame! I hope everyone was made to feel special, because you are!
We continued our fabulous day in second grade. Our class worked hard and enthusiastically all day - what a great group of students!
Our school-wide theme is SHINE - we are shining our brightest all year! Our school motto is:
Don't shine so that others can see you - shine so that through you, others can see HIM. Our 1st/2nd grade community team name is Honesty (we have the "H" from the word "SHINE"). We'll come up with a motto soon.
A huge thank you to all the parents for everything you do to support our class and St. Joe's in general. It is very appreciated!
